Five Filipino candidates are vying to be president as the Philippines gets ready to hold its national elections on May 9.
Aquino’s successor and former interior minister Manuel Roxas, Vice president and opposition leader Jejomar Binay, Senator Grace Poe, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and Senator Miriam Santiago are the candidates vying for the highest position in the country.
Incumbent President Benigno Aquino is barred from seeking re-election due to the constitution term limit.
Opinion polls taken by Pulse Asia between April 26-29 showed Duterte leading the race by 33 percent, followed by Roxas with 22 percent. Poe was at 21 percent and Santiago at the last spot at two percent.
More than 54 million Filipinos are choosing a new president, vice president, about 300 lawmakers in the two-chamber Congress and about 18,000 local government positions in the nationwide elections.
