NEW YORK, United States (Reuters) — The New York Immigration Coalition on Sunday (December 18) organized a rally against President-elect Donald Trump in New York City to mark International Migrants Day.
“I’ve come with a message of steadfast solidarity from the brothers and sisters of Community Voices Heard,” said a representative of the organization at the podium. “Why? Because we are immigrants. Why? Because we are an organization built 20 years ago. Women who were fighting against welfare reform. We’ve seen these tactics before. What did they call us? Welfare queens.”
“The number of hate crimes has increased by 32 percent, since Donald Trump was elected. What does this mean? That Donald Trump equals hate,” said another protester at the podium in Spanish.
After the rally, protesters carried signs reading, “Stand with immigrants” and chanted, “What do we do? Stand up. Fight back.” as they walked through the streets of Manhattan.
