Pulse Asia: Majority of Filipinos oppose proposed shift to federalism

(Eagle News) — Majority of Filipinos oppose the proposed shift to a federal system of government, results of a recent Pulse Asia survey showed.

The survey, conducted through interviews of 1800 respondents from June 15 to 21, said 62 percent of Filipinos are not in favor of the shift, with 34% opposing it now and in the future and 28% being against it now but may be open to it in the future.

According to Pulse Asia, except in Mindanao, with 51 percent of support, majority levels of opposition to federalism was now recorded across geographic areas and socio-economic classes.

Forty one percent of those in Luzon are against the proposal and in the future, while about the same percentages in Metro Manila, the Visayas, and Class ABC are in favor of federalism now (23% to 34%), oppose it now but may be open to it in the future (24% to 43%), or reject it now and in the future (25% to 34%).

According to Pulse Asia, in Class D, basically the same percentages either reject federalism now and in the future (35%) or oppose it now but may be open to it in the future (28%).

In Class E, nearly the same percentages either support a shift to a federal government now (36%) or oppose such a move now and in the future (33%).

Among the note-worthy events during the period the survey was conducted were the ouster of Maria Lourdes Sereno as Supreme Court Chief Justice, the signing into law of the Mental Health Act by President Rodrigo Duterte, and the intensified campaign against loiterers, among others.

Pulse Asia’s survey has a + 2% error margin at the 95% confidence level.

“Subnational estimates for the geographic areas covered in the survey have the following error margins at 95% confidence level: + 6% for Metro Manila, + 3% for the rest of Luzon and + 5% for each of Visayas and Mindanao,” Pulse Asia said.
