PUV modernization program to be implemented starting next week

MANILA, Philippines (Eagle News) — The Department of Transportation (DOTr) will start the implementation of the government’s public utility vehicle (PUV) modernization program next week.

DOTr undersecretary for roads and transport network and general manager of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Tim Orbos said that they will not totally phase out the jeepneys.

Only the old and dilapidated units will be phased out as part of “the three-year transition beginning January,” he said.

He said that to determine the age of a jeepney, the Motor Vehicle Inspection System (MVIS) will be launched.

He urged PUV operators to cooperate so the public will have a more convenient and safer public transportation.

“The more you delay your transition to a modern version of the program therefore, the more you lose because people will definitely pick the modern the more convenient safer public transportation,” said Orbos.

The PUV modernization program aims to replace the old and dilapidated jeepneys with more environment-friendly and high-quality vehicles.
