Question for the next president

pres 4QUEZON City, Philippines (March 29) – As the next president of the Philippines, how would you unite all the government officials working under you and how would you effectively lead the Philippines in order to minimize the problems faced by our country?

This is an important question that the next president of the Philippines should consider.

With the growing number of problems existing in our country, not to mention the numerous calamities that continuously hit the Philippines, it is our responsibility as a people to seek the qualities of excellent leadership in our next leader. He or she should be effective in uniting the diverse groups that comprise Philippine society. Without a doubt, a united Filipino people can definitely solve all of the country’s problems.

For a long time, our country has been classified as a Third World country, which means that we are considered as a developing country. Here’s another question: Why have we not left the development stage? Why, with all of our touted natural resources, do we still remain poor?

Our unique geography makes our country prone to all kinds of natural disasters. Our country sits astride the typhoon belt. And as a double whammy, we are also inside the Pacific Ring of Fire. Adding to the problem are man-made environmental disasters like the high annual population growth rate, loss of agricultural lands, deforestation, soil erosion, air and water pollution, improper disposal of solid and toxic wastes, loss of coral reefs, mismanagement and abuse of coastal resources, and over-fishing. Question: Is the next president ready to face all of these?

According to Unlad Kabuhayan, poverty, unemployment and environmental legislation are the major issues facing the country. These problems have resulted in a large number of Filipinos moving overseas in order to find employment. Ingrained corruption in the government is also one of the big problems of our country.  The people are charged with many taxes but said taxes end up in the pockets of the wicked and the corrupt. As such, here we are, with massive traffic jams, absent flood control systems and never-ending road constructions. Other problems are high crime rates, drugs, poor healthcare and educational system. Question: How will the next president address these urgent issues?

Unity among the government officials can be considered as the number one factor that could provide an effective solution to the aforementioned issues besieging the  Philippines. The role of the president in addressing these problems is very important. Being the president gives one a host of powers that if used properly, will go a long way to make the Philippines better.

On our part, we should never stop asking relevant questions. In this way, our government and the President that leads it, will be force to meditate on the urgent issues that burden our country.
