Residential building fire injures five in New York City

NEW YORK, NEW YORK, United States – A raging fire spread to four residential apartment buildings in New York City’s Brooklyn neighborhood on Tuesday (March 29) injuring at least 5 people and leaving dozens homeless, said the Fire Department of New York (FDNY).

“We have damage to five buildings. This is fifth alarm, there’s over 200 of our members here tonight. We’ve had five injuries, not serious injuries to civilians. Many people are homeless unfortunately right now. The fire is still doubtful, we’re still putting it out,” said New York Fire Department Commissioner Daniel Nigro.

Firefighters battled a 5-alarm fire which started in a house on DeKalb Avenue, between Wilson and Knickbocker avenues, in Bushwick, NBC said.

The FDNY said the residents of the buildings “self-evacuated” as hundreds of firefighters arrived to extinguish the blaze. The cause of the fire is under investigation, local media said
