Pasay City – GlobalPort Batang Pier secured the last quarterfinal berth in the 2017 PBA Commissioners’ Cup after Terrence Romeo sank a clutch three to bring down the slumping Alaska Aces, 107-106, in the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
The game was tied with 30 seconds left at 102-all before Stanley Pringle broke the tie by splitting his charities. Calvin Abueva seized the opportunity when he made an off-balanced jump shot with 21 seconds left in the game.
With a chance to close out the game, Romeo hit a three-point basket with nine seconds left on the clock to put Batang Pier up by 2.
Abeuva had the chance to retaliate but his shot rattled out the rim with six seconds left. The rebound was taken by Justin Harper in which Ping Exciminiano fouled immediately to keep their hopes alive.
Harper splits his charity free throws but Simon Enciso missed the wide-open three-point shot in the other end.
Harper manned the inside as he finished with 32 points and seventeen rebounds while Romeo finished with 26 points – 18 points of which came from three-point baskets. Stanly Pringle also had a notable night with 21 points, six boards, and five dimes.
Ending the conference, Abueva had 31 points, thirteen rebounds, and two blocks while import Cory Jefferson had 32 points and sixteen boards.
This was the first time that the Aces are eliminated after nine PBA conferences.
GlobalPort will now have only a day to rest before facing the top-seeded team Ginebra San Miguel on Tuesday, June 6 at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
