JUNE 1 (Reuters) — Dwayne Johnson’s “San Andreas” dominated the box office, earning $53.2 million in its opening weekend at 3,777 U.S. locations, crushing predictions of a $40 million launch for the Warner Bros.-New Line 3D disaster pic.
Universal’s “Pitch Perfect 2” came in second at the box office, finishing with $14.8 million at 3,660 locations. The comedy sequel has outperformed expectations with a total of $147.5 million in 17 days in the U.S., and earnings of $80 million-plus internationally.
Disney’s “Tomorrowland” was in third place this weekend, bringing in $13.8 million for a $63.2 million 10-day total.
On the foreign front, “Tomorrowland” took in a mere $29.3 million from 75 markets, grossing $70 million internationally.
“Mad Max: Fury Road,” brought in $13.6 million at 3,255 sites, for a total earnings of $115.9 million in the U.S in 17 days.
“Avengers: Age of Ultron”, rounded the top five with a total earning of $10,9 million.
