Sandiganbayan acquits former AFP chief Villanueva of graft

(Eagle News) — The Sandiganbayan has acquitted former Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief Diomedio Villanueva of graft.

In acquitting Villanueva, the First Division said the prosecution failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt that he committed the offense when he, as postmaster general at the Philippine Postal Corp., supposedly refunded PhilPost USA, a private company  $1,031,936.04 or P53,043,834.52.

The amount supposedly represented  “Terminal Dues paid for mail matters sent to Royal Mail (UK post office).”

Villanueva was AFP chief from 2001 to 2002.
