(Eagle News Service) — Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago said that it is possible that Vice-President Jejomar Binay would soon be facing an impeachment complaint for betrayal of public trust if he continues to refuse to answer allegations against him in the Senate.
Santiago said there is evidence on Binay’s alleged unexplained wealth that the Vice-President should explain.
The Senator said Binay’s continued refusal to appear before the Senate to answer the allegations on his alleged wealth, already constitutes betrayal. Binay would also appear guilty, if he will not face his accusers in the Senate, Santiago said.
The senator said the Vice-President could even be cited in contempt, if he continues to snub the Senate’s investigation.
Santiago said former Makati Vice-Mayor Ernesto Mercado has also passed the legal requirement for a state witness since he had even made admissions against his interest.
The Senate is continuing its probe on the allegedly overpriced Makati City government’s parking building that had dragged Binay into the controversy.
Binay’s former vice-mayor had alleged that Binay had received commissions or kickbacks during his term as mayor of Makati for the various government projects.
Recently, he also linked Binay to a 350-hectare farm in Rosario, Batangas. (ENS)
