Senate approves free Internet access in public places, free tuition subsidy in SUCs

(Eagle News) — The Senate has approved on third and final reading Senate bills that would  provide free Internet access  in public places, and free tuition subsidy for those enrolled in state universities and colleges (SUCs).

Senate Bills 1277 and 1304, respectively, were separately approved by the Senate on Monday.

Senate Bill No. 1277 or the free internet access bill was approved with 18 votes and no abstention.

The bill, also called the “Free Internet Access in Public Places Act” was authored by Senator Paolo Benigno Aquino IV, Senate Pro Tempore Ralph Recto and Senators Francis Pangilinan, Manny Pacquiao and Joel Villanueva.

Under this bill, free internet access will be provided in public places and government offices, including the following areas:

  • National and local government offices
  • Public basic education institutions
  • State universities and colleges
  • Public hospitals and health centers
  • Public parks, plazas, and libraries
  • Public airports and seaports
  • Public transport terminals

Also approved on final reading was the  Senate Bill No. 1304, which will  establish a permanent full tuition subsidy for more than one million Filipino citizens enrolled in SUCs.

This bill was also sponsored Aquino, former chairman of the Senate committee on education.
