(Eagle News)– The Senate has approved on third and final reading a bill that would put in place a national ID system.
Seventeen senators voted for Senate Bill No. 1738 known as “An Act Establishing the Philippine Identification System,” while only two–Senators Francis Pangilinan and Risa Hontiveros–dissented.
Under the measure, the national ID, which would contain the PhilSys Number and other relevant information of the individual “shall serve as the official government-issued identification document of cardholders in dealing with all national government agencies, local government units, government -owned or controlled corporations, government financial institutions and all private sector entities.”
A similar measure was earlier approved by the House of Representatives.
If ratified by the two houses of Congress, it will then be submitted to President Rodrigo Duterte for signing into law.
