QUEZON City, Philippines (Eagle News) — Farmers and farmer cooperatives will no longer need to pay their outstanding fees for irrigation services provided by the National Irrigation Authority if the proposal made by Senator Win Gatchalian is passed in the Senate.
Senator Gatchalian made the proposal to support the poor farmer-tillers.
The Senator also said that the government should help the farmers, especially those who do not have their own land, as they are the backbone of the Philippine agricultural sector.
The debts of the country’s farmers due to irrigation fees amount to over P13 billion.
