(Eagle News)–The Senate on Tuesday, May 29, ratified the bicameral conference committee report on the Philippine Identification System Act that seeks to establish a national ID system.
Only Senator Risa Hontiveros registered a no-vote on the report.
The ratification came a day before Congress was slated to adjourn sine die.
Senator Ping Lacson, chair of the committee on public order and dangerous drugs, said the measure aims to reconcile government IDs into a system called PhilSys.
Leftist lawmakers have slammed the passage of a national ID system measure, saying, among others, that such a system would infringe on Filipinos’ rights to privacy.
