(Eagle News) — Only 15 suspects of 419 suspects in hazing deaths have been convicted since 2002.
This is according to Senator Sherwin Gatchalian, who quoted data from the Philippine National Police Directorate for Investigation and Detective Management.
According to Gatchalian, who spoke at the start of the hearing into the death of Horacio Castillo III on Monday, this represents a conviction rate of a “measly” 3.6 percent.
Present in the hearing were Castillo’s parents; John Paul Solano, a primary suspect; former Senator Joel Lina, primary author of the Anti-Hazing Law; University of Sto. Tomas Faculty of Civil Law dean Nilo Divina; and Jason Adolfo Robinos, a member of the Aegis Juris fraternity; among others.
Senator Panfilo Lacson said Robinos reported to his office around 5 p.m. on Monday.
Gatchalian said the data applies from January 2002 to Sept. 2017.
