President Rodrigo Duterte has called for a special session to be held on Saturday to discuss martial law in Mindanao.

This was confirmed by Senate Majority Leader Vicente Sotto right after the talk between the majority coalition and the President a while ago in Malacañang.

According to Sotto, based on Duterte’s request, the joint session on martial law in Mindanao–which could be extended to 60 more days—will be held at 9 a.m.

The declaration of martial law across Mindanao made by the President on May 23 is set to lapse on Saturday, in accordance with the 60-day allowable period set by the Constitution.

Because Congress is on sine die break, and will resume session on July 24, the President reportedly wants to discuss the issue sooner.

Under the Constitution, the President is required to convince Congress about extending martial law.
