Several public school principals on Friday, June 29, voiced out their opposition to the implementation of a Quezon City ordinance banning the sale of junk food and sugary drinks in schools.
Dr. Rosalito Deroda, principal of Pangako Elementary School, for instance, said “boiled” food items were “not attractive” to students, and would therefore not be sold.
She noted that there were some food items such as “banana cue” and “turon” that should not have been included in the list of prohibited food in the first place.
“Konti lang sugar dun, hindi gaano kadami,” she said.
But the city government stood by its list of banned items, saying it underwent a thorough study.
Dra. Verdades Linga of the City Health Department noted that “banana cue” and “turon” were in the deep-fried category, which meant they were unhealthy for children.
Quezon City Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte , for her part, gave the assurance the city government would “occasionally” review the food items included in the list, even as she said the existing list of banned food items would stand as it is.
