SEOUL, South Korea (Reuters) – South Korean President Moon Jae-in has ordered a probe into the introduction of four additional anti-missile launchers to the two deployed by the United States military before his election, his spokesperson said on Tuesday (May 30).

Moon was “shocked” to hear that the four additional Terminal High Altitude Area Defense launchers deployed to counter the North Korean missile threat, were brought in without this being reported to the new government or to the public, presidential spokesperson Yoon Young-chan told a media briefing.

The deployment of the THAAD system by the US military, agreed upon by the government of Moon’s predecessor, was a controversial issue in the May 10 presidential election.

It has infuriated China, North Korea’s lone major ally.
