Women’s tennis world number one Simona Halep finally captured her first Grand Slam title by beating American Sloane Stephens in the 2018 French Open final, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.
After dropping the first set against the younger Stephens, Halep took control and started strongly in the second set.
The Romanian then broke the tiring Stephens serve in the third set to put her in firm control of the match.
With her win in Roland Garros, Halep has finally captured an elusive Grand Slam victory after three previous defeats in a major final.
She had previously lost two French Open finals, in 2014 against Maria Sharapova and in 2017 against Jelena Ostapenko.
She was beaten earlier this year in the Australian Open final by Caroline Wozniacki.
