FLORIDA, United States (Reuters) — A sinkhole appeared on a road directly in front of United States President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida.
Repair crews, on Monday (May 22) put up barricades around the small hole that measured about four feet by four feet (1.2 x 1.2 meters), local media reported.
City workers believe the sinkhole formed near a newly-installed water main and will conduct an exploratory excavation later in the day.
Trump, who is currently on his first foreign tour since entering the White House, has hosted foreign leaders and heads of state at the resort which he often refers to as the “Winter White House.”
Florida is prone to sinkholes because of its porous limestone foundation and the cavities that are the result are a common feature of the state’s landscape – such as springs, lakes and portions of rivers.
Sinkholes mostly occur as naturally acidic underground water flows through and dissolves the underlying limestone. North and central Florida, particularly in the Tampa area, generally are more vulnerable than south Florida.
