(Reuters) A suspect is being charged with capital murder Sunday (August 9) after deputies entered a North Houston home and discovered the bodies of two adults and six children.
In a news conference, Harris County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Tim Cannon announced that David Conley, 48, is being held with no bond.
“We are here today on a very sad day,” he said. “It’s a difficult day for us at the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. Once again, a senseless tragedy has struck our community.”
The incident started late Saturday night after authorities responded to a call to perform a welfare check on the residence.
Deputies surrounding the house saw a child’s body through the window and decided to enter the home, according to deputies. The suspect started shooting from inside the house, forcing them to pull back and wait for hostage negotiators and a unit that specializes in high-risk situations.
Negotiators then got the suspect to surrender and arrested him, Cannon said.
“Tactical medical deputies entered the home and pronounced the death of 6 children and 2 adults,” Cannon said.
The victims ranged in age from six to fifty. Two of the victims were female and six were male, police said.
