SEOUL, South Korea (Reuters) — The South Korean government said on Wednesday (August 9) that North Korea’s latest military threat to the United States is not good for the relationship of the two Koreas.
Earlier in the day, North Korea said it is considering plans for a missile strike on the US Pacific territory of Guam, just hours after President Donald Trump told the North that any threat to the US would be met with “fire and fury.”
Seoul’s Unification Ministry spokesman Baik Tae-hyun said South Korea’s military is fully prepared for contingencies and that United Nations sanctions should be enforced.
Washington has warned it is ready to use force if needed to stop North Korea’s ballistic missile and nuclear programs but that it prefers global diplomatic action, including sanctions. The UN Security Council unanimously imposed new sanctions on North Korea on Saturday (August 5).
