South Koreans expressed concerns on Wednesday (January 6) after North Korea’s nuclear test.
North Korea’s state TV on Wednesday announced the reclusive country had successfully conducted a test of a miniaturised hydrogen nuclear device.
One Seoul resident said he was worried about North Korea’s claim that it had used a hydrogen bomb for its fourth nuclear test.
“I hear this is the first time it has ever used a hydrogen bomb for its nuclear test and it even caused about a 5-magnitude earthquake. I feel very nervous indeed. On the other hand, because North Korea is a country that has committed to continuous provocative actions, I think they have something they need from the international society. It upsets me,” said 30-year-old Gil So-chon.
“I felt very nervous when I heard the news about North Korea’s nuclear test. I hope the six-party talks are resumed to resolve the issue peacefully,” said 60-year-old Jang Kyoung-jin.
North Korea, under U.N. sanctions for its nuclear and missile programmes, has previously conducted three nuclear tests – in 2006, 2009 and 2013 – all at Punggye-ri, near the location of Wednesday’s earthquake. (Reuters)
