SAN FERNANDO CITY, August 16 (PIA) – Since last week, southwest monsoon has brought heavy rainfall and inclement weather in some parts of the country.
In La Union, more local chief executives have called off classes today both in public and private schools by issuing respective public advisories to safeguard schoolchildren from the effects of the bad weather.
Early Tuesday, classes in the following areas in La Union have been suspended:
- San Fernando City – all levels
- Bacnotan – all levels
- Balaoan – preschool to senior high school
- Bangar – all levels
- Rosario- all levels
- Santo Tomas – all levels
- Pugo – pre-school to elementary
- Bauang – all levels
- Caba – all levels
- Aringay – all levels
Also, classes and work in all campuses of the Don Mariano Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU) are suspended.
“Let’s attend to our children/properties. Good if we can help others,” DMMMSU President Benjamin Sapitula said in a text message.
Further, public advisories issued by the La Union Police Provincial Office (LUPPO) said the following areas are not passable:
- Barangay Ilocano Bridge and Barangay Ipet (Sudipen, La Union)- not passable to all types of vehicles due to the strong current flow from the irrigation
- Rimos 3, 4 and 5 (Luna, La Union) – not passable to all types of vehicles
Meanwhile, reports on flooding were received by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (PDRRMC) in the following areas:
- Sitio Kalingit, Agdeppa, Bangar – hip-level flooding
- Barangays Ubbog and Gen. Prime West, Bangar – knee-level flooding
Based on the Northern Luzon weather forecast of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) issued at 7 a.m today, monsoon rains which may trigger flashfloods and landslides will be experienced over the Ilocos region and Benguet.
Cloudy skies with light to moderate rains and thunderstorms will be experienced over Batanes, Isabela, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, Cagayan, Ifugao, Mt. Province, Abra, Apayao, Kalinga and Aurora.
Moderate to strong winds blowing from the southwest will prevail over Northern Luzon and Aurora Province. The coastal waters along these areas will be moderate to rough.
Meanwhile, the Low Pressure Area (LPA) was estimated based on all available data at 1360 km east of Baler, Aurora(14.7°N, 134.2°E).
