CANNES, France (Reuters) — “Trolls” stars Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick took to the stage in Cannes on Wednesday (May 11) to perform a duet of Cyndi Lauper’s ‘True Colors’ which is featured in the yet to be released animated film.

The actors were there at the Cannes Film Festival’s Palais for a screening of select footage from the film.

The film, still in post-production, sees Timberlake playing cynical troll Branch, an outsider in an overly happy world of trolls. The actor also served as executive producer on the film’s soundtrack, mixing original compositions with mashups of classics songs.

“It’s amazing, you know, to work on all the music for a film, but also specially one that you’re playing a lead character in, that’s also an animated film. Animated films are, you know, they just never miss,” said Timberlake.

Kendrick who also lends her voice to troll Princess Poppy (Kendrick) confessed being nervous on collaborating with Timberlake for the film’s soundtrack.

“Obviously I felt really intimidated the first time that I worked with Justin and he is such a professional and really helpful, could really direct in specific notes and you know, made everything feel so attainable,” said Kendrick with a laugh.

Timberlake described his character as the pessimist in the film.

“My character Branch is sort of the one troll that’s maybe a little pessimistic, maybe he thinks he’s being a realist, but he keeps saying to everyone, you guys have to stop singing and dancing so loud, you’re gonna attract the Bergens and he ends up being right,” he noted.

Along with Kendrick and Timberlake, the film features the voices of comedians Russell Brand and James Corden, and the singer Gwen Stefani.
