‘Steam-driven eruption’ monitored at Taal: PHIVOLCS

Alert level 1 still in place

(Eagle News)–A “weak phreatic or steam-driven eruption” was  monitored at Taal on Wednesday, May 8, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.

According to PHIVOLCS, it occurred between 8:27 a.m. and 8:31 a.m.

The event at the volcano, which remains on alert level 1, produced “white steam-laden plumes” that rose 2000 meters above the main crater, PHIVOLCS said.

It said the phreatic activity was “likely driven by the continued emission of hot volcanic gases at the Taal main crater and could be succeeded by similar events.”

Although sulfur dioxide emissions decreased this week and averaged 2191 tons per day, PHIVOLCS said average SO2 emissions remain high since January, at 8913 tons per day.

It said the ban on the entry into the permanent danger zone should remain in place the public.

Pilots should also avoid flying close to the volcano.
