Reuters — The film adaptation of the Stephen King novel “It” broke box office records during its opening weekend making an impressive $117.2 million at the North American box office, blowing away early expectations. The film broke the record for the largest September opening set by “hotel Transylvania 2” in 2015. The horror film’s global debut is expected to gross $179 million dollars.
The Reese Witherspoon led romatic comedy “Home Again” finished second with 9 million dollars domestically.
Previous box office champ “Hitman’s Bodyguard,” starring Samuel L. Jackson and Ryan Reynolds, placed third with 4.9 million. Horror film “Annabelle: Creation” finished with 4 million, and “Wind River” finished off the top five with 3.2 million.
