Strong winds force passenger jet off runway in Kansas

Strong winds forced a passenger jet with 160 people on board off of the runway in Wichita, Kansas, as severe weather continues to batter much of the United States, local press reported.

The Allegiant Air jet was taxiing to depart to Las Vegas late Sunday night when it was blown off of the tarmac.

The 160 passengers and 6 crew on board were then taken by bus back to the terminal and the taxiway was closed, according to news reports.

A number of flights have out of Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport have been canceled or delayed due to severe weather conditions.

Snow, sleet and hail snarled transportation across much of the Midwest and Southwest on Monday during one of the busiest travel periods of the year after more than 40 people were killed by tornadoes and floods during the Christmas holiday season.
