(Eagle News)–One out of three Filipino families escaped poverty, a recent Social Weather Stations survey said.
The figure translates to 30 percent of families, of which 18 percent, according to the First Quarter 2018 survey, used to be poor five or more years ago, and 12 percent used to be poor one to four years ago.
According to the pollster, the number of “newly non-poor” was two points lower than the record-high 14 percent newly non-poor recorded in December 2017.
Fell into poverty
The SWS said that one of eight Filipino families, or 12 percent, fell into poverty.
The 12 percent, the pollster said, consists of 6 percent who used to be non-poor five or more years ago, and 6 percent who used to be non-poor one to four years ago, a figure that was similar to the 6 percent newly poor recorded in December 2017.
Overall, 58 percent rated themselves as non-poor, while 42 percent rated themselves as poor.
The survey was conducted from March 23 to 27.
It was done via face -to-face interviews of 1200 adults: 300 each in Metro Manila, Balance Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
Sampling error margins were pegged at +-3 percent for national percentages, and +-6 percent each for Metro Manila, Balance Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
