The Syrian government and its opposition have reached an agreement on evacuating the besieged militants and families in three towns under UN mediation, sources said Sunday.
According to the agreement, militants trapped in the Syrian-Lebanon border town of Zabadani will be allowed to head for the airport in Lebanon’s capital Beirut through a secure channel and leave for Turkey under the supervision of the International Red Cross, starting from Monday, sources said.
The militants have so far been besieged in the town for several months by the Syrian government forces.
At the same time, around 300 families trapped in two Shi’ite towns in the rebel-held northern Syrian province of Idlib will also be evacuated, according to the agreement.
Instead of passing through the rebel-controlled Idlib, the families will head for Turkey through a land route and then fly to Beirut, sources said.
Neither the Syrian government nor the Syrian media has spoken or reported on the agreement as of Sunday night.
Earlier in December, the Syrian government and militants in Homs reached a settlement agreement that led to the evacuation of the militants from the city.
On Dec. 24, the government and militants in the southern suburbs of Damascus reached an evacuation agreement under UN mediation. More than 4,000 militants and their family members are likely to be evacuated from the region in the near future. (CCTV)
