BANGKOK , Thailand (AFP) — Thailand’s Rangsit University said on Monday (May 9) it had blacklisted a group of students they discovered were using high-tech devices to cheat during entrance exams to study medicine.

Suspicions were raised when university officials noticed some students were wearing glasses that were an unusual size.

An investigation found that both smartwatches and cameras concealed in the spectacles were allegedly being used to cheat.

Local media reported that two students had been hired for 6,000 baht (170 USD) to take a video of the exam papers with the glasses, adding that they then left the three-hour exam after only 45 minutes.

Rangsit University’s Deputy Director, Naret Pantarathorn, said they believed tutors were then watching the recording from a separate location and sending the answers in text messages delivered to other students’ smartwatches.

The university said it had cancelled the entrance exams due to take place on Saturday (May 7) and Sunday (May 8), rescheduling them for a later date.

Five students and a tutoring school were involved in the cheating, the university alleged.

The students allegedly involved would be unable to retake the exam, it added.
