Tom Cruise said on Saturday (July 25) he would be open to reprising his role as Maverick in a possible Top Gun sequel as he attended the British premiere of ‘Mission: Impossible- Rogue Nation’ in London.
”It would be fun. I would like to get back into those jets,” he told Reuters.
”It would have to be practical, I don’t want any CGI jets. I want to shoot it like how we shot the first one,” he added.
The 53-year-old actor has made no secret of his enjoyment of making films his way and often performs his own stunts. In the latest installment of the Mission Impossible franchise, it’s no different.
Having previously swung around skyscrapers and leap off buildings as secret agent Ethan Hunt, in ‘Rogue Nation’, Cruise clings to the side of a plane as it takes off and holds his breath under water for more than two minutes.
He insisted that he keeps the rest of the cast and crew calm during the stunts.
”When I’m underwater or on the plane, my job is to tell everyone it’s going to be okay. We’re going to be okay. We’re going to go through it. We spent a lot of time training for it, but it is a stunt.”
His co-star Simon Pegg, who makes his third outing in the action-franchise as agent Benji Dunn, said he’s ”always a little bit frightened” during Cruise’s stunts.
“It’s amazing to watch, he obviously doesn’t take it lightly. He’s always very very careful, but there is always the odd thing that could go wrong and when you are there on the day, when you watch the movie, you know he made it, it’s fine. But on the day, it’s like, why not,” Pegg said.
Rebecca Ferguson makes her debut in the series as disavowed British agent Ilsa Faust. She said Cruise’s love of stunts inspires the rest of the cast.
”I feel challenged. I feel I am put in a position where I can try something out which I can’t get to do when I’m older,” she said.
Hundreds of fans attended the premiere at London’s BFI Imax.
Cruise and his co-stars spent over an hour on the red carpet signing autographs and taking selfies with adoring fans.
In the film, the Impossible Mission Force has been disbanded and Hunt and his team face off with the sinister Syndicate organization. The film is partly set in Casablanca, London and Vienna, where a world premiere was held on Thursday (July 23).
“Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” is scheduled for release in the UK on July 30 and in U.S. cinemas on July 31.
