(Eagle News) — Commuters will have to brace themselves on Monday, as transport groups are set to stage a strike in Metro Manila and in several provinces in protest of a looming jeepney phaseout.
The Southern Police District’s public information office said in a statement that the rallyists are set to assemble at Monumento Circle at 6 a.m. on Monday, and in other “protest centers” around the city.
The statement did not specify the other protest centers.
It also did not specify the number of rallyists expected, but said that the Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Opereytor (Piston)–which has thousands of members—has confirmed its attendance.
According to the statement, the protesters–who seek to put a stop to the government’s plans to phase out old jeepneys, and to require a P7-million minimum capital for jeepney operators and 10 units for each franchise—are expected in the Quezon City Memorial Circle around 11 a.m.
They will then proceed to Mendiola in Manila.
“Commuters should seek alternative means of transportation…,” the statement said.
