Trillanes seeks Senate probe into police’s intensified campaign vs loiterers

(Eagle News) — Senator Antonio Trillanes IV is seeking an investigation into the Philippine National Police’s intensified campaign against loiterers.

In filing  Senate Resolution No. 775, Trillanes said the drive “poses a grave threat to human rights of Filipinos and violates due process of law.”

Trillanes noted that the drive has resulted in the death of detainee Genesis Argoncillo.

The police, said, however, that Argoncillo was arrested for “alarm and scandal.”

Earlier, Senator Bam Aquino sfiled Senate Resolution No. 772, asking the committee on public order and dangerous drugs to conduct a similar probe “with the end of view of protecting from unjust, discriminatory and abusive policies and practices.”

At the House of Representatives, the Makabayan bloc filed a similar resolution.

The Palace has argued the drive was to ensure the safety and security of the public, noting that only loiterers who violate national laws and ordinances were arrested.
