WASHINGTON, DC, United States (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday (June 19) offered condolences to the family of an American university student who died days after being returned to his family in a comatose condition following 17 months of detention in North Korea.
University of Virginia student Otto Warmbier had been arrested in North Korea while visiting as a tourist. He was returned to the United States last week by Pyongyang, suffering extensive brain damage that left him in a state of “unresponsive wakefulness.”
Trump, speaking at the start of a conference with high technology chief executives, denounced North Korea as a “brutal regime.”
