Tsunamis not a threat to the Philippines after New Zealand quake – PHIVOLCS

QUEZON City, Philippines (Eagle News) — The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) clarified that residents living in coastal areas need not worry about tsunamis that could be caused by the magnitude-6.8 earthquake that hit New Zealand.

According to PHIVOLCS, the Philippines was too faraway to be affected, if any.

The monitoring agency also asked the public to refrain from spreading unverified news about tsunamis as these may cause panic.

A magnitude-6.6 quake hit New Zealand’s South Island on Tuesday, July 11.

No damage nor deaths were reported.
