SYDNEY, Australia (Reuters) — Two eight-year-old boys were killed and another three children were badly hurt after a car crashed into a classroom in Sydney on Tuesday (November 7), Australian police said.
A sport utility vehicle smashed through the wooden wall of the school in Sydney’s west around 9.45 a.m.(2245 GMT Monday), where 24 primary-age children were in class with their teacher, police said in a statement.
Five children were rushed to hospital, including the two deceased boys. Three girls, two aged 8 and another aged 9, remained in hospital in a serious or stable condition. Another 16 children and their teacher were treated for minor injuries at the scene.
Police said the driver was a 52-year-old woman who was not hurt but was taken to hospital for blood and urine tests as part of the crash investigation.
Traffic And Highway Patrol Commander Acting Assistant Commissioner Stuart Smith said that “a late model silver Kluger vehicle” entered the rear yard of the school and then “collided with a hardwood building or a classroom at the end of the carpark.”
“The vehicle continued inside the building and tragically we have had a number of young children injured as a result. In the classroom today, the class is 27 kids, 24 were in attendance,” he added.
