Two senators say there’s nothing to President Duterte’s revolutionary gov’t statement

(Eagle News) — Two senators on Monday played down the statement of President Rodrigo Duterte he would declare a revolutionary government if destabilization moves resulted in chaos.

In a statement, Senator Tito Sotto said  Duterte’s pronouncement remains an “idea at this point.”

As such, he said “we have no reason to be wary about it.”

“He probably feels the country’s stability could be in jeopardy that’s why he is thinking of ways to protect it just in case,” Sotto said.

Senator Panfilo Lacson, for his part, said the public should already be “accustomed to President Duterte’s impulsive statements.”

He noted that he did not believe that the President would make such a declaration anyway.

“…Not now, not anytime during his term. He knows he won’t and can’t do it,” he said.

As such, he said “there’s no point reacting negatively or otherwise to such and other similar pronouncements.”

President Duterte said on Tuesday that he would “not hesitate to declare” a revolutionary government if the country descended into chaos because of the destabilizers’ efforts.

He said the same type of government was declared by former President Corazon Aquino.
