XINJIANG, China (CCTV) — Two successive landslides hit northwest China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region over the past weekend, interrupting local traffic and killing livestock.
The two landslides happened within less than nine hours.
On Saturday night, the first landslide hit Yining County around 18:00. Large amounts of debris blocked many major roads. The second landslide occurred in the same county at 02:00 of Sunday, burying 397 animals.
The local government in Yining County evacuated residents near the accident site after the second landslide.
“It’s dangerous. We’ve evacuated all residents nearby. After the evacuation, we will arrange experts to observe the weather,” said Wei Yihe, deputy director of Land and Resources Bureau of Xinjiang Yili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture.
According to local Land and Resources Bureau, the landslide area is more than 2,000 square meters. The volume of debris measures some 6,000 cubic meters.
The blocked road was reopened later on Sunday.
