(Eagle News) — Two respondents in the P6.4-billion shabu shipment that entered via Customs express lanes in May tried to leave the country.

In separate press conferences, Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre and Bureau of Immigration spokesperson Atty. Ma. Antonette Mangrobang named the respondents as Richard Tan and Kenneth Dong.

Aguirre said Tan tried to bribe immigration officers, but “he wasn’t successful.”

“..Our senior supervision officers rejected the bribe being offered,” Aguirre said.

Mangrobang, for her part, said Dong also made the attempt.

Dong,Tan  and several others were indicted before the Valenzuela Regional Trial Court in connection with the shabu shipment.

The court, however, dismissed the case, noting what it said was a lack of jurisdiction.

The Department of Justice has appealed the court decision.

The Bureau of Internal Revenue has also filed tax evasion charges against Dong and Mark Taguba, self-confessed fixer.
