U.S. Department of Justice to assist in California shooting investigation -Lynch

U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch said on Thursday (December 03) that the Department of Justice will offer “any and all assistance necessary” to the investigation of a deadly California shooting that killed 14 people and wounded 21 others.

To commemorate the victims of the shootings, U.S. President Barack Obama ordered that flags at public buildings be flown at half-staff .

Flags around the Washington Monument and the World War II memorial were lowered.

Lynch said that the Department of Justice would assist other law enforcement agencies in their investigations.

“And as this investigation unfolds we intend to provide any and all assistance necessary to both local authorities and most importantly to the people of San Bernardino who have been so profoundly affected by this unspeakable crime. As I stated earlier this morning I know that I stand with all Americans when I say that my thoughts and prayers and those of my colleagues at every level of the Department of Justice are with the families and loved ones of the victims and with the brave public safety officials who put themselves in harm’s way to save others,” he said.

Authorities say the shootings were carried out by married couple, 28 year-old Syed Rizwan Farook and his wife, Tashfeen Malik, 27, but they have yet to determine a motive.

The couple stormed a holiday party attended by his San Bernardino County co-workers, in what appeared to be a planned attack before dying in a shootout with police, leaving a shaken community with few clues to deduce a motive for the carnage. (Reuters)
