U.S. first lady Michelle Obama left Cambodia on Sunday (March 22) after a two-day visit to promote an education initiative to empower girls.
Cambodia is one of the 11 countries included in the “Let Girls Learn” Peace Corps initiative.
During the trip, Obama met with school girls, local community leaders, NGOs representatives and also Peace Corps volunteers involved in education projects in Cambodia.
“The Ministry of Education Youth and Sport with the USAID will organize a project in order to continue to strengthen and upgrade and give the chance to our female children and female students to carry out the initiative “Let Girls Learn” which was (promoted) by Mrs Michelle Obama,” Cambodian Education Minister Hong Chuonarun told reporters.
Obama is the first American first lady to visit Cambodia and groups involved in education projects hope her visit will help persuade policymakers in the Cambodian government to push harder for gender equality in education.
