ZHUHAI, China (CCTV) — The construction of a primary underground tunnel of the cross-sea HK-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge in Zhuhai City of south China’s Guangsong Province was linked up on Monday, marking a milestone toward completing one of the world’s longest bridges.
Construction of the Gongbei Tunnel has been one of the most difficult parts of building the 55-kilometer bridge. The 2,741-meter tunnel connects Zhuhai City to the main bridge.
“The completion means the key techniques we adopted have all made breakthroughs, such as pipe roofing, freezing and excavation in multilayers and multiple steps. These techniques have all been very successful,” said Pan Jianli, director of the tunnel construction project.
“We have resolved the basic risks of some big dangers, such as the inflow of water and mud, collapse and vault crown settlement,” said Pan.
