Watch: Florida residents get into shelters ahead of hurricane Irma

Hundreds of people find shelter in the state of Florida, as Governor Rick Scott warns that all of the state’s 20 million inhabitants should be prepared to evacuate as Hurricane Irma bears down for a direct hit on the southern US state.

Charley Rossy, one of those who decided to evacuate to a shelter, said: “This is huge, so it got to the point where it’s a big storm, you are going to have a lot of wind for a long period of time and I didn’t really feel like I could be safe being in a house, so yesterday my wife and I made the decision that we needed to go to a shelter.”

“The hurricane really is quite dangerous so I decided to come here, my house doesn’t feel safe, it’s a big house, but it’s an old house,” Gisella Pizarro, another Florida resident said,

Roberto Valdodano, American Red Cross Spokesman, said they foresee hurricane Irma having an impact for weeks, or even months.

“The reality might be that this is going to be days, weeks, perhaps months, depending on the severity of the impact of that storm. It’s a storm that is bigger, stronger and more dangerous than hurricane Andrew, that basically sets the stage of what to expect ahead of time,” he said.
