(REUTERS) Typhoon Chaba battered southern parts of South Korea on Wednesday (October 5) with violent winds and heavy rains, leaving at least six people dead, according to media reports, and flooding the country’s main port, industrial cities and major factories.
Video posted on social media websites and provided to Reuters showed muddy floodwaters rushing down streets, carrying cars and debris.
Overnight, the storm ripped through the southern island of Jeju, where 26 flights were cancelled on Wednesday and one person was reported missing amid widespread power outages and damages to homes and building structures.
The country’s largest port in the city of Busan remained shut for the second day as Chaba whirled past just miles from the shore and headed east towards Japan. A port authority official said it was expected to reopen later in the day.
Hyundai Motor’s main factories in the city of Ulsan, which produces the Accent cars and Sante Fe sport utility vehicles, was temporarily suspended after it was partially flooded, according to a company spokesman.
Parts of the ship yards along the southern coast were also temporarily suspended, including Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co Ltd.’s Geoje operations, Yonhap news agency said.
More than 80 flights at the Gimhae Airport serving Busan were cancelled as of mid-day on Wednesday, an airport official said. The KTX bullet train service from the south was also suspended temporarily partly due to power supply was interrupted.
