QUEZON City, Philippines (Eagle News Service, June 22) – After a long wait, “Jurassic World” continues the adventure started years ago by renowned filmmaker Steven Spielberg. The film is set on a theme park whose main attraction – genetically-reconstructed dinosaurs, draws a crowd of 20, 000 daily. Then, we have a genetically-engineered dinosaur designed to draw more of the crowd by making it bigger and with more teeth.
What do you think will happen?
Watching the latest installment in the famous franchise makes me think what if I am stranded in a an island theme park full of rampaging dinosaurs?
Here are some of the insights I learned from the film:
1. Follow the rules. When the park employees tell you that the park is closing for the day and you should return to your hotel, return to your hotel!
2. Jump. When choosing between a drop to a waterfall and a 50-foot carnivorous, genetically-modified dinosaur, choose the waterfall… Jump!
3. Stick with the guy with the gun. After many misadventures and narrow escapes, the brothers realized that the only way to be safe is to stick with the guy with the gun.
4. Trust your big brother. He may be embarrassed about your enthusiasm and may be busy staring at girls but when the going gets tough, you can be sure that he will ensure that both of you survive!
5. Get off the phone. Vibrations attract dinosaurs and when talking to the phone, you may be too distracted to notice the flying pterodactyls.
6. Listen to the animal trainer. After spending so many time with the dinosaurs, they know their moods and the nuances of their actions. If they told you to run, run!
8. Fight dinosaurs with dinosaurs. At the end of the day, you’ll learn that your guns are to no avail and the only way to fight giant reptiles is to make them fight each other. Good thing they’re carnivores and have no qualms fighting each other.
9. Don’t mess with Mother Nature. And for me this is the underlying message of the film. We may not be aware of it but we are actually surrounded by many genetically-modified organisms, made by corporations in the name of profit. Although it may not be as dramatic as a carnivorous dinosaur escaping, these GMO’s also have an unknown impact to our environment.
